AGPI launches Romania’s first insurance policy covering damages caused by tourists

The Association of Property Owners of Romania (AGPI) proudly announces the launch of the first-ever insurance policy in Romania that covers damages caused by tourists staying in short-term rental properties.
This landmark initiative is the result of a partnership between AGPI, Safety Broker – Romania’s largest insurance broker – and Asirom Vienna Insurance Group, a major player in the national insurance market.
The new policy will be officially available starting in 2025.
A breakthrough for the Romanian insurance market
Until now, no existing insurance policy in Romania covered damages caused by tourists.
Even a standard voluntary home insurance policy does not compensate major damages – such as theft, fire, or flooding – if it’s proven that the property was occupied by tourists and not the owner.
Additionally, minor damages (scratches, broken or stained items, excessive dirt, etc.) have never been covered.
Through this innovative product, AGPI has successfully adapted a traditional insurance product to today’s hospitality market by:
Making major damages insurable, even when caused by guests;
Adding a special supplement for minor damages, providing complete protection for property owners.
Peace of mind for property owners
Thanks to this innovation, property owners can now rent their properties outside Airbnb or Booking.com without worrying about potential financial losses.
In practice, Airbnb often rejects reimbursement claims, while Booking.com only covers up to 500 RON, which is far from sufficient in most cases.
AGPI strongly urges all property owners to carefully review the terms and conditions of any other insurance claiming to cover guest-related damages — they typically do not.
The most common reason agents use to sell other insurance products is the vandalism clause, which applies only when the perpetrator is unknown.
Since the tourist’s identity is known, the claim is automatically denied.
Every insurance company has a specialized department that thoroughly reviews claims and identifies, according to its terms and conditions, any valid reason to refuse payment.
With this new policy, AGPI, Safety Broker, and Asirom finally provide a real and transparent solution to protect Romanian property owners active in the short-term rental market.
